When Post Animal stepped into the studio for their new album, it was the first time all six original members were in the studio together for nearly a decade. Three band members had recently relocated away from Chicago, not to mention Joe Keery having left the band in 2017 to focus on acting. In the end they started right back up at the beginning, rediscovering that uncompromising closeness of connection they all shared from those endless hours spent in practice spaces and the late-night diner runs that follow. Prolonged stretches of time together not only reinforced the strength of their friendship—it reinvigorated their music. “If you want to get one hour of good painting in, you have to have four hours of uninterrupted time,” David Lynch once said. The product of a few straight weeks together, IRON (due July 25th) not only finds them reunited with Keery but is the embodiment of 30 days of camaraderie and unbound musical exploration, their renewed connection ironclad.

Originally a raw, visceral blues-rock outfit inspired by the likes of such juke joint rockers as , the Black Keys have expanded their purview after mastering their garagey roar with Rubber Factory in 2004. Making the leap to the major-label , the duo of guitarist/vocalist and drummer Patrick Carney dove into heady psychedelic territory, sometimes assisted by producer . The band's collaborations with the adventurous hip-hop producer opened the doors to a variety of sounds, colors, and textures, a broadened palette they'd channel onto sharp songs on their platinum-selling albums Brothers and El Camino, both arriving in the early years of the 2000s. After the trippy 2014 album Turn Blue, the Black Keys took an extended hiatus through the back half of the 2010s, during which time set up his Easy Eye Sound studio and label. The duo returned with renewed vigor on 2019's Let's Rock, maintaining that momentum with the blues covers album Delta Kream in 2021 and the hard-grooving, guest-heavy Ohio Players in 2024.

Writing music is when I am the most honest - which I suppose is strange given that those listening are, for the most part, the ones I know the least. But now and then I meet someone who listens to my music and I’m struck with the realization that we understand each other in a way that is actually quite profound. These people are lovers, they’re heartbroken, and they’re inspired. They’re hungry to hear their stories told back to them in new ways, they’re deep thinkers, and they really know me. My music is quite like them - it’s vulnerable, authentic, and open hearted.

Julia Laws spent her formative years on Fidalgo Island off the coast of Washington State. Emerging from the region’s DIY music scene, Laws steadily built her distinctive sonic identity. After moving to Los Angeles, she began to produce and record her own music, releasing Ronboy’s first EP Velvet in 2020. Matt Berninger (The National) took notice and invited Laws to record and perform with him while promoting his debut solo album, Serpentine Prison. Berninger and Ronboy later collaborated with Resynator on a cover of Tom Petty’s “Only a Broken Heart” in 2021. In the summer of 2022, Ronboy released her debut album, Pity To Love. Amidst release, Ronboy joined Jade Bird for a handful of tours on bass and vocals, and she later pinch-hit on bass for IDLES at the band’s LAFD benefit show in Los Angeles.

🎵 IG: @thebeths
The Beths know the futility of straight lines. This existential vertigo serves as the primary theme on the New Zealand indie heroes’ fourth album Straight Line Was A Lie (their first for new label ANTI-). The Beths posit that the only way round is through; That even after going through difficult, transformative experiences, you can still feel as though you've ended up in the same place. It's a bewildering thing, realising that life and personal growth are cyclical and continual. That a chapter doesn’t always end with peace and acceptance. That the approach is simply continuing to try, to show up. “Linear progression is an illusion,” lead singer and songwriter Elizabeth Stokes says of the album. “What life really is is maintenance. And finding meaning in the maintenance.” The path from The Beths’ critically celebrated and year-end-list-topping 2022 LP Expert In A Dying Field to Straight Line Was A Lie, written in Los Angeles and recorded in the band’s hometown of Auckland, was also anything but straightforward. For the first time, Stokes was struggling to write new songs beyond fragments she’d recorded on her phone. She’d recently started taking an SSRI, which on one hand made her feel like she could “fix” everything broken in her life, from her mental and physical health to fraught family dynamics. At the same time, writing wasn’t coming as easily as it had before.

Man-Made Sunshine is the side project from Conor Mason (Nothing But Thieves), which was developed during lockdown, with Conor channelling his own self-discovery into a very personal musical project that blends elements of alt-indie, psych-pop and electronica into an experimental fresh new sound. He says: “I started with the question of 'Man-Made Sunshine' - am I able to find it and make it myself, or is it made for me? The project is ultimately about inner growth - I headed into some heavy places to find healing from loss and focused on thoughts and feelings around death, grief of others and my old self.”

Known as the lead singer of Circa Survive, Saosin, L.S. Dunes, — just to name a few projects — Green has always turned to music to find strength, but after his overdose, something changed: “I did not want to live the remainder of my life as an addict. Writing this record was a way to cope." While most of his music has grappled with the realities of addiction and mental illness, there's something different about the songs on his new solo album, Boom. Done. It was written over the last couple of years, following an overdose where Green's struggle with addiction led to him actually losing his life for up to 8 minutes, and a formal diagnosis of bipolar disorder. After Green left rehab in 2020, he started writing a song called “I Don’t Want to Die,” a sentiment that captures the raw, sometimes heartbreaking, but also hopeful nature of Boom. Done. It turned out to be a lightning strike to his songwriting and, with the help of longtime friends and bandmates Tim Arnold and Keith Goodwin of , Green wrote one of the most intentional and formidable bodies of work in his expansive career. All across this record, we watch as Green stumbles and grows, moving from isolation “hanging vulnerable in darkness on the ocean floor,” to triumphantly asserting his will to live. Boom. Done. arrives July 22nd via Philadelphia's Born Losers Records.

On their fifth album, The Lash, The Dirty Nil strips back their signature flash and colour for something raw and relentless. Inspired by brutal Italian bronze reliefs and medieval aesthetics, the Hamilton, Ontario band embraced a stark black-and-white visual style, ditching their previous vibrant palettes for spikes, skulls, and knives. Recording with local engineer Vince Solivari, the band captured a more urgent and unfiltered sound in just two weeks at Boxcar Sound. The Lash is a cathartic reset—one that trades polish for grit, delivering The Dirty Nil at their most visceral and honest.

Pool Kids' third album, Easier Said Than Done, shimmers with emotional clarity and courage. Adrenalizing and irresistible, it brings the dynamism of the band’s live show into the studio, showcasing a style that's unmistakably their own. Pool Kids first started playing on Tallahassee's house show circuit. The band earned a fan in Paramore's Hayley Williams with their debut album, 2018's Music to Practice Safe Sex To. After they filled out to a four-piece -- Andy Anaya on guitar, Nicolette Alvarez on bass, Caden Clinton on drums, and Christine Goodwyne on guitar and vocals -- their 2022 self-titled record netted critical acclaim with its lush, high-contrast mixture of pop, emo, and math rock. They've shared stages with The Mountain Goats, PUP, Beach Bunny, and La Dispute. They hold fast to their DIY principles: Anyone can do what Pool Kids do. Anyone can start a band. For Easier Said Than Done, Pool Kids worked with producer Mike Vernon Davis (Foxing, Great Grandpa). They funded the record themselves, and spent five weeks recording in Seattle. To save money during sessions, they stayed with friends, in motels, and slept on the floor of the studio. "We did a lot of searching, playing each song a million different ways and deciding which one sounded the best," says Goodwyne. With the completed record in hand, the band signed to Epitaph.
🎨 IG: @deftones
Deftones have always defined boundless creativity in the music space. Across nine studio albums, they have carved out an unmistakable sonic identity — ferocious yet dreamlike, while making space for constant refinement and surprise. Now, decades on from the groove-forward sound of their era-defining debut, Adrenaline, and following a long line of masterpieces including 2000’s White Pony, 2010’s Diamond Eyes and 2020’s Ohms — an album that earned them their second and third Grammy nominations — they return with one of the most focused statements of their career: private music. Joining the band’s creative core of Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham and Frank Delgado (as well as touring bassist Fred Sablan, who appears on the album) is producer Nick Raskulinecz, who previously worked on Diamond Eyes and 2012’s riveting Koi No Yokan. The result is a lean, masterfully paced 11-song set that plays like a new Deftones benchmark. Meditating on the beauty and peril of nature, the challenge of cultivating a positive mindset and visions of a journey beyond the physical realm, private music showcases Deftones at their most evolved. At once a psychedelic voyage and a skull-rattling wallop, it’s the latest peak in a catalog filled with immersive, emotive triumphs.
